The Mask 3 (2025) – Jim Carrey Rumors Spark After Fan Poster Goes Viral

A wave of nostalgia recently swept through social media after a poster for The Mask 3: Return of Loki began circulating online — but fans might want to hold their horses. While the concept of Jim Carrey returning as Stanley Ipkiss set the internet abuzz, this “announcement” is, unfortunately, pure fiction.

The viral poster, allegedly teasing a 2025 release, features Jim Carrey alongside Ryan Reynolds. Its overly smooth, plastic-like visuals and oddly generic design quickly raised eyebrows, leading many to suspect it was AI-generated. The source? A Facebook fan page called Jason Statham Fandom, which also posted a lengthy, AI-sounding synopsis promising “slapstick humor” and “explosive action sequences” for the nonexistent sequel.

The Reality Behind The Mask Sequel Rumors

As of now, Warner Bros. has no The Mask sequel in development. The original 1994 hit, based on Dark Horse Comics, became one of Jim Carrey’s most iconic roles, blending cartoonish mayhem with over-the-top comedy. But its 2005 follow-up, Son of the Mask — starring Jamie Kennedy — was both a critical and commercial flop, seemingly ending the franchise.

Mike Richardson, creator of The Mask comics, has expressed interest in reviving the property, noting the original comics’ darker, more violent tone compared to Carrey’s family-friendly version. However, despite a few “false starts,” no concrete plans have materialized.

“We’ve been talking about reviving The Mask, both in film and comics. The version audiences know, thanks to Jim Carrey’s performance, is very different from the original comics, where the character, known as Big Head, is far darker and more violent.”

Would Jim Carrey Ever Return?

Carrey himself has long been selective about sequels. While he reprised roles in Ace Ventura, Dumb and Dumber, and Sonic the Hedgehog, he has shown little interest in revisiting The Mask unless it involved a “crazy visionary filmmaker.” In recent interviews, Carrey has even suggested he’s close to retiring from acting, saying in 2022, “I’m being fairly serious” about stepping away from the industry.

‘While fans continue to clamor for a sequel, Jim Carrey’s involvement seems unlikely. The actor has historically shied away from sequels, with exceptions like Ace Ventura and Dumb and Dumber. When asked about revisiting The Mask, Carrey told ComicBook.com that it would depend on the right visionary filmmaker:

“I don’t want to do it just to do it. But I would only consider it if it was some crazy visionary filmmaker.”

Carrey also confirmed his absence from Son of the Mask, and in recent years, he’s hinted at winding down his acting career. In 2022, he told Variety, “Well, I’m retiring. Yeah, probably. I’m being fairly serious.”

Fan Hopes vs. Reality

Without Carrey’s involvement, a The Mask sequel would likely struggle to capture the same magic that made the original a classic. For now, The Mask 3 (2025) remains nothing more than a fan fantasy — a fun “what if” that has no official backing. Still, the buzz proves one thing: the love for Jim Carrey’s green-faced alter ego hasn’t faded in over 30 years.
